Charlotte NPA boundaries vs neighborhood names
Realtors say South End; Mecklenburg GIS says NPA 476 and neighbors. Neighborhood Profile Areas (NPAs) are the statistical units behind our map choropleths and QoL housing indicators, but they rarely match a single marketing brand. This guide explains how Know Charlotte unions NPAs into named pages, why figures change when crosswalks update, and what to verify before you compare our data to MLS listings or Zillow boundaries.
What is an NPA?
Neighborhood Profile Areas are Mecklenburg County GIS polygons used by Charlotte's Quality of Life Explorer and planning departments. Each NPA has a numeric ID and a label (often a subdivision or corridor name). NPAs are statistical units, not HOA boundaries, not ZIP codes, and not always realtor marketing brands.
Know Charlotte uses NPAs as the atomic unit for choropleth maps because QoL and many local GIS layers publish at NPA resolution. When you click the map, you see NPA-level truth.
Why marketing names differ
"South End," "NoDa," and "Uptown" are social names that span multiple NPAs. Conversely, one NPA may cover only part of a familiar name. Our crosswalk JSON unions NPAs per curated slug with editor notes when boundaries are disputed (e.g., Uptown vs NPA 1, Steele Creek corridor extent).
MLS listings use subdivision names that may not align with NPAs. Always verify school assignment and municipal services at the parcel level on county GIS.
How we build named pages
Each /n/[slug] page loads npa_ids[] from seed crosswalk, unions geometries for preview maps, and population-weights metrics. If we remove an NPA from a slug, figures change; we document major crosswalk edits in git history and methodology.
Alias redirects (301) map old or colloquial slugs to canonical names per our SEO link graph.
Common mistakes
Do not compare a single NPA to a Zillow neighborhood boundary, different vendors. Do not assume circular "South End" Yelp zones match our union. Do not use NPA crime or income stats to steer buyers away from protected classes, see fair housing guidance in our demographics guide.
When relocating, tour blocks inside and outside the NPA border on the same street, micro-location matters.
